Sodium sulfite reacts with dilute sulfuric acid:
Na2SO3 + H2SO4 → Na2SO4 + H2O + SO2
A student carried out an experiment to measure the molar volume of sulfur dioxide. 0.200 g of sodium sulfite was added to 0.150 mol dm−3 sulfuric acid in a boiling tube and the volume of gas given off was measured. Sulfur dioxide is soluble in water, so collecting the gas over water cannot be used. Complete the diagram to show the apparatus that could be used to measure the volume of gas. (Diagram shows a boiling tube containing the sulfuric acid and sodium sulfite, with a delivery tube already drawn coming from a bung.)
